Food &
Agriculture

Rising populations, changing consumer trends and global climate change demand a reset of food and agriculture systems.

In the UAE, food security is high on the agenda. The nation imports approximately 90 per cent of its food due to its desert climate.

The onset of the global pandemic reinforced the integral role that food and agriculture plays in the economy. A heavy reliance on imports has prompted a shift in focus to developing solutions that increase self-sufficiency and the resilience of the UAE’s food system and supply chain. The National Food Security Strategy 2051 exemplifies this urgency with a bold ambition to ensure access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food year-round.

Expanding access to affordable, locally-grown fresh produce

To help the UAE population access food at affordable prices, we created Silal. Through various programs and innovation-led initiatives, Silal facilitates the sustained production, sourcing, and distribution of essential foods to the nation’s retailers and the wider community.

Silal also provides local farmers with access to a network of engineers who offer training and advice on crop mix to help maximize profit. To monitor crop growth, Silal introduced IoT sensors to capture key parameters affecting crop growth – enabling farmers to make better decisions on irrigation, fertilization, and crop management to maximize locally-grown fresh produce.

Accelerating Agthia’s strong growth trajectory

Through organic and acquisition-led growth, Agthia has emerged as the domestic market leader in essential food and beverage categories including, water, flour and animal feed, and expanded regionally in two new categories, snacks and animal protein.

Driving innovation and competitive differentiation

With our innovation-led approach, we are harnessing AgTech capabilities to advance the development of the Food & Agriculture cluster and increase sustainability, quality and efficiency.

By developing the UAE’s first fresh produce AgTech Park, we are accelerating local food production and distribution. Taking greenhousing to a new age, the AgTech Park will enable fruits and vegetables to grow in a controlled environment year-round. It will also attract new operators to produce locally, helping improve productivity for local farmers.
